Significant Events
- Achieved six years with no lost-time injuries in June
- Moved into a new office building, which was awarded Gold Certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System
- Hosted a presentation by the National Safety Council on distracted driving (primarily cell phone use) attended by more than 500 people, including employees, their families and the staff and students at Seneca High School
- Improved production process to make product more uniform in size, a product quality improvement
Community Relations
- Took a more active role in the Illinois River Area Chamber of Commerce (IRACC), hosting one of their “Business After Hours” meetings
- Sponsored the YMCA Partners in Youth program and the LaSalle County Eco Meet
- Encouraged employees to maintain, on company time, a one-mile stretch of the Illinois & Michigan (I&M) Canal, which serves as a hiking/biking trail
- Sponsored the Newspapers in Education event at Seneca High School
Community Donations
- Donated more than $10,000 to community organizations in 2009, including the United Way of Eastern LaSalle County, Starved Rock Area Special Olympics, LaSalle County Easter Seals, Canal Corridor Association and Ottawa River Rescue
- Contributed $800 of in-kind goods and services, including donations to Illinois & Michigan Canal, Securitas, Ottawa Salvation Army, Seneca Food Pantry and Marseilles Food Pantry
Awards
- Recognized by the YMCA as a Partners in Youth sponsor
- Recognized by the United Way of Eastern LaSalle County as a member of the Top Ten Club (percent increase) and the Top Twenty Club (combined corporate and employee gifts)
- Awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Office of the Governor for work with the I&M Canal
- Received a Safety Leadership Award and a Perfect Record Award from the National Safety Council for six years without a lost-time injury
Energy and Environment
- Increased use of photocells for lighting to reduce energy consumption
- Insulated and sided the Laboratory Building to improve energy efficiency
- Installed a chlorination system for the plant well and a water softener and iron removal system for the office building well to improve water quality
Local Procurement
- Made local purchases in 2009 of $2.9 million, or 87 percent of total expenditures (excluding major expansions, raw materials, energy and transportation)
