Significant Events
- Achieved 8 million hours worked without a lost-time injury among employees and 1 million hours without a lost-time injury among full-time contract employees
- Completed plant turnarounds safely at the 01, 02 and 04 ammonia plants
- Launched the PCS Model Farm and Agricultural Resource Centre in February, and held three training sessions involving 40 farmers
- Held a major fundraiser for the United Way called SHOW (Simply Helping our World) in August
- Increased local purchasing from 37 percent to 59 percent year-over-year
- Cut the employee turnover rate in half from 9.1 percent to 4.5 percent
Community Relations
- Participated in 12 meetings of the Health, Safety, Environment & Community (HSEC) Committee of the Point Lisas Energy Association, discussing a wide range of community issues, including teachers’ training, community emergency response training, sponsorship of community activities, local road and traffic issues, school partnership program and interschool competition
- Held seven meetings with government officials, including the Minister of Health, the Minister of Agriculture, the Environmental Management Authority and the Ministry of Energy; issues discussed included the PCS Model Farm, a new lab at the Couva Health Facility and the PCS Laboratory relocation
- Sponsored the National Safety Awards
- Became sponsors of the PCS Silver Stars Steel Orchestra in November
Community Donations
- Donated a total of $72,000 to the PCS Starlift Steel Orchestra, Lady Hochoy Home, St. Helena/Cunupia Zonal Sports, American Chamber of Commerce and Cancer Treatment Centre
- Contributed $6,000 of in-kind donations to community organizations, including the United Way Trinidad & Tobago and the National Safety Awards
- Raised an additional $32,000 for the United Way through a fundraiser called SHOW (Simply Helping our World), which was supported by all employees and members of the local community with sponsorship, contributions of time and talent (fashion and music) or ticket purchase
- Participated in the United Way Day of Caring, held for the benefit of more than 400 children
Education Initiatives
- Awarded three scholarships to local students worth a total of $3,360
- Continued to partner with the primary school in California, Trinidad
- Hosted information booths at the Summit of Americas Conference, University of the West Indies, University of the Southern Caribbean and University of Trinidad & Tobago
- Participated in the T & T Chamber of Commerce career fairs in both Trinidad and Tobago, along with other career fairs throughout the year
Awards and Recognition
- Recognized by the United Way for increased participation
- Finalist in the Champion Employer of the Year Award given by the Employers Consultative Association
- Received the company of the year award by the Society of Tribologists and Lubricant Engineers for safety performance, environmental performance and the impact on the gross domestic product of the country where it operates
Energy and Environment
- Improved the energy efficiency of the 01, 02 and 04 ammonia plants
Local Procurement
- Made local purchases in 2009 of $100.8 million, or 59 percent of total expenditures (excluding major expansions, raw materials, energy and transportation)
