Operations

Annual capacity — 786,000 tons of ammonia
Products — anhydrous ammonia, urea, nitric acid, ammonium nitrate and liquid fertilizers

Performance

Significant Events

  • Set a record for observations under the Behavioral Based Safety Process, completing 9,286 (a 29 percent improvement over 2008)
  • Set an annual ammonia production record of 760,998 tons
  • Increased nitric acid plant capacity by 40 tons per day; improved plant reliability by replacing key pieces of process equipment; reduced nitrous oxide emissions by about 1,500 tons per year (a greater than 90 percent reduction)
  • Increased the urea synthesis capacity by 170 tons per day; increased urea prilling capacity by 150 tons per day; improved plant reliability by replacing key pieces of process equipment and raised energy efficiency in the urea process by 120,000 million Btu per year
  • Developed core competencies to improve leadership skills for supervisors and other leaders
  • Implemented a wellness program that provides fruit, fitness equipment, on-site aerobic classes and a monthly wellness newsletter for employees

Community Relations

  • Participated in the River Road Community Advisory Panel (CAP), which held four meetings in 2009; focused on how the CAP can become more involved in local schools, on-site railroad safety and how community participation in the CAP can be improved

Community Donations

  • Donated $90,870 to community organizations, including Southeastern Natural Sciences, University Health Care Foundation, Augusta Boxing Club, Morris Museum of Art and the United Way
  • Contributed $12,344 of in-kind goods and services to Adopt-a-School, Golden Harvest Food Bank, Toys for Tots, Kentwood Nursing Home, University Healthcare Foundation, the United Way and the River Road CAP

Education Partnerships

  • Participated in education initiatives and partnerships, including an Adopt-a-School program with Hornsby Elementary and East Augusta Middle schools; a coop program affiliation with Georgia Tech and Clemson University; sponsored all Aiken County science and mathematics teachers at the annual Teacher’s Appreciation Dinner; and supported Augusta State University’s 2009 National Science Olympiad
  • Contributed to the Augusta Boxing Club, with a portion of the money used to fund a scholarship that includes tuition, fees and books

Awards

  • Recognized by the United Way for Top Corporate Gifts and Top Campaigns with fewer than 300 employees in Richmond County
  • Recognized by Toys for Tots as a Generous Giver
  • Recognized by W.S. Hornsby Elementary School as a Generous Volunteer

Energy and Environment

  • Provided $25,000 to Augusta’s Southeastern Natural Science Academy to assist in the long-term funding of projects to study nutrient loading in the upper Savannah River Basin and dissolved oxygen levels in the Savannah Harbor
  • Reduced total nitrogen discharges into the Savannah River by more than 16 percent compared to 2008 by identifying wastewater discharges and processing the wastewater internally
  • Installed a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) control device on the stack in the C-1 nitric acid plant, which reduced NOx emissions by about 1,500 tons/year — a 94 percent reduction over 2008

Local Procurement

  • Made local purchases in 2009 of $34.6 million, or 65 percent of total expenditures (excluding major expansions, raw materials, energy and transportation)
