Performance
Significant Achievements
- Produced a record 2.834 million tonnes of finished product in 2008.
- Expansions led to recruiting challenges, but still hired 69 employees.
- Resolved mineral rights acquisitions for the Rocanville West project.
Environmental Initiatives
- Undertook Phase 2 of the brine pond expansion to ensure adequate brine and flood storage. Project was close to completion by year-end.
- Began upstream dike construction to increase the fine tailings pond capacity.
Community Relations
- Held on-site meetings in fall 2008 to provide information to the public about the expansion project and the Mineral Rights Unitization Agreement and process.
Community Contributions
- Cash donations to community organizations in 2008 totaled $136,274; the main recipients were Moosomin and District Health Care, Rocanville Fire Department, Town of Moosomin – Fire Hall Expansion, Welwyn Fire Department – Fire Hall Building Project, Spy Hill Lions Club, Rocanville Skating Rink, Rocanville Aquatic Centre, Rocanville Town & Country Golf Club.
- Made a corporate commitment of $500,000 to the Moosomin Health District to build a new hospital. Half this commitment was contingent on the community raising a matching $250,000.
Educational Initiatives
- Awarded three scholarships to children of employees: a corporate scholarship of $3,000 per year and two $1,000 divisional scholarships.
- Continued to participate in the University of Regina's Cooperative Education Program by hiring engineering students for work terms. Participate in a similar program with the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology for certain technical students.
Local Procurement
- Made local purchases in 2008 of goods, materials and services totaling $43.9 million, or 66 percent of all expenditures (excluding major expansions, raw materials, energy and transportation).
