Lanigan
Operations
Mining depth – 1,000 meters
Annual capacity – 3.8 million tonnes KCl
Products – granular, standard and suspension-grade potash
Performance
Significant Events
- An employee died in a vehicle accident at the mine site.
- Completed a $410 million debottlenecking and compaction expansion, which primarily entailed refurbishing a mill that had been idle since the mid-1980s.
- Hired 65 employees and promoted 17 others; the shortage of skilled tradespeople and mining engineers continued to be a challenge.
Community Relations
- Contributed to the Town of Lanigan’s 100th anniversary celebrations in July with a donation, participation in a parade and a potash mining display at the town hall.
- Employees who have children in Grade 9 participated in a Take Your Kids to Work Day in November.
- Hosted an open house celebrating the re-opening of the mill and recognizing 40 years of production at Lanigan. More than 300 employees, family and friends attended.
Community Contributions
- Donated $52,460 to community organizations. Major recipients were Lanigan Centennial celebration, Lanigan Youth Centre, Watrous Rotary Club, Nokomis Fire Department and Viscount Central School.
- Made in-kind contribution of $8,653 to the local community, specifically in providing and maintaining accommodations for the Lanigan locum doctor.
- Sponsored and provided volunteers for three Red Cross blood donor clinics.
Environment
- Continued construction of the shallow fine tailings pond to prepare for a new filtration technique developed after extensive testing at PotashCorp facilities, including Lanigan.
- Raised the west inner dyke to its final elevation and installed a cross dike to divide the pond in two. Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2009.
Local Procurement
- Made local purchases in 2008 totaling $51.2 million, or 72 percent of all expenditures (excluding major expansions, raw materials, energy and transportation).
