Performance
Significant Events
- While changing hoist cables in a shaft, an employee fell, receiving injuries; in response, a safe work plan was developed. The job will be completed from a different location in the future to reduce risk.
- After a 14-week strike, a new three-year collective bargaining agreement was reached with the United Steel Workers.
- Expansion work continued during the strike; despite the challenges, good progress was achieved and many structures were in place by year-end.
- Added a specialist to the safety team to help train supervisors to perform spot checks, key procedure audits and job task analysis. One full-time safety supervisor was assigned to underground and another will work with surface departments.
Awards
- Recognized by the United Way of Saskatoon and Area (along with PCS Allan and PotashCorp Head Office) for $2 million in lifetime contributions.
- Cory’s mine rescue team was runner-up in the underground practical skills section of the provincial mine rescue competition.
Community Relations
- Gave 37 site tours.
Community Contributions
- Donated $10,600 to local organizations in 2008. Major recipients included the Children’s Health and Hospital Foundation, Saskatchewan Potash Golf Tournament, Falcons Boys Division 1 Softball, Ducks Unlimited and Vanscoy School.
Environmental Initiatives
- Began to decommission three areas: one contaminated with hydrocarbons and two asbestos pits.
- The asbestos pits are no longer used. Signs will be put up in 2009 showing the location and stating that they are decommissioned, and the locations will be placed on all relevant site maps and drawings.
Local Procurement
- Made local purchases in 2008 totaling $21.9 million, or 78 percent of all expenditures (excluding major expansions, raw materials, energy and transportation).
