Cincinnati
Operations
Cincinnati produces phosphate products for food and technical applications.
Annual capacity – 150,000 tons per year
Performance
Significant Achievements
- Successfully brought a new product production line to full capacity.
- A major production line was constrained during the fourth quarter due to raw material shortages stemming from a strike at some PotashCorp potash mines.
- Aided by our Behavioral Accident Prevention Process®, we completed a second consecutive year with no lost-time accidents; only one recordable accident occurred in the past two years.
- Developed control strategies to reduce zinc and copper levels in National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) water discharges in response to new regulatory limits that take effect in September 2009. Significant reductions were achieved in 2008. Phosphate levels in the NPDES discharges were also lower than the previous year.
- Had no reportable hazardous material losses or permit violations.
Community Relations
- Continued to participate in the Community Action Panel (CAP). Updates about our operations are reported at the four CAP meetings held each year. Residents, school representatives, fire and rescue representatives and employees from a neighboring organic chemical production plant attended meetings. The reports keep communities informed about issues affecting our activities. A primary focus at CAP meetings has been providing updates on the status of groundwater and soil remediation projects. The soil remediation project on our property was completed in 2008; the arsenic hazard was also fully remediated.
- The community raised no complaints or concerns in 2008.
Community Contributions
- Made cash contributions to local organizations in 2008 of $3,977. Donations went to United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Crosby Fire Department, Crosby Township Adopt-a-Family program, Harrison High School and Crosby Elementary School.
- We are a business partner with the local grade school and high school. We support school programs and sponsor a "LEAP" award that provides savings bond awards to deserving students at Crosby Elementary School who exhibit excellent effort and improvement each semester. Twelve $50 savings bonds were awarded. We received a recognition poster from the school for our support.
- In-kind contributions to local organizations were approximately $850. Beneficiaries were Harrison Community, Crosby Elementary School, the local Community Advisory Panel and community emergency response groups.
Local Procurement
- Made local purchases in 2008 of goods, materials and services totaling $2.9 million, or 78 percent of all expenditures (excluding major expansions, raw materials, energy and transportation).
