Performance
Significant Developments
- Annual production records were set at the 03 ammonia plant in 2008.
- Recruitment and retention continued to be a challenge, especially in the first half of 2008. We addressed this challenge by reviewing our compensation, modifying and communicating our benefits package, accelerating the training and development of a young workforce and ensuring succession planning was in place.
- The Key Procedure Audit program was strengthened to proactively identify and resolve risk conditions. This program involved developing a formal coaching strategy. A pilot program was initiated at the 03 plant and led to a significant increase in the quantity and quality of key procedure audits conducted in 2008.
- In early 2009, we achieved eight million hours worked without a lost-time injury and our full-time contract employees achieved one million hours without a lost-time injury.
Community Relations
- We hosted a community leaders meeting and several Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER) committee meetings to further familiarize CAER members with our operations. The committee is composed of corporate neighbors, residents and regulatory agency representatives. CAER and the Point Lisas Energy technical subcommittee have merged to form a Health, Safety, Environment and Community committee.
- During 2008, several meetings were held with government officials, including the Minister of Energy and Minister of Agriculture, Land and Marine Resources, to ensure they remained familiar with the operations of PCS Nitrogen Trinidad. Presentations on the company and our sustainability initiatives were given at these meetings.
- The PCS Model Farm and Agricultural Resource Centre was formally launched in February 2009.
- Fact sheets on our operations were provided to the media due to the significant interest generated by the PCS Model Farm. A key focus was to ensure that members of the farming community understood that the PCS Model Farm and Agricultural Resource Centre would not be a "mega-farm", and would not be in commercial competition with the local farming community.
Community Contributions
- Cash donations to community organizations in 2008 totaled $77,000. Major beneficiaries were PCS Starlift Steel Orchestra, United Way Trinidad & Tobago, National Safety Awards, Lady Hochoy Home Music Makers and Caroni Education District School Sports.
- In-kind contributions totaled $5,000. Beneficiaries included United Way Trinidad & Tobago, University of the West Indies, University of Trinidad & Tobago and Trinidad & Tobago Chamber of Commerce.
Education Initiatives
- We provide on-the-job training in collaboration with the University of Trinidad and Tobago, the University of the West Indies and technical schools through the placement of engineers and technicians in our trainee programs.
- We continue to partner with the California Government Primary School, which is located in our immediate community.
- We awarded two educational scholarships to local students in 2008.
Environment
- We surpassed our target of ensuring that at least one hour of environmental training was received by the entire workforce.
- We were able to reduce our toxic release inventory by 1.4 million pounds.
Awards and Recognition
- Recognized by United Way Trinidad & Tobago for our continued contributions to local charities.
- Received the PotashCorp President's plaque for achievement in 2008 of seven million hours worked without a lost-time injury.
Local Procurement
- Made local purchases in 2008 of goods, materials and services totaling $47.6 million, or 37 percent of expenditures (excluding major expansions, raw materials, energy and transportation).
