Operations

Fosfatos do Brasil uses imported phosphoric acid and limestone to produce microgranulated dicalcium phosphate (DCP). It has an annual capacity of 121,000 tons of this animal feed supplement.

Significant Achievements

A mineral salt unit was built at Lavras with a capacity of 550 tons/month.

Community Relations

The site held two public meetings in 2007. Issues discussed included security and safety, social projects and environmental issues.

Two meetings were held with the environmental agency, CETESB, to discuss the increase in the dust emissions in the wet scrubber chimney, substituting the cyclone in order to improve efficacy, and the revision and renewal of the Risk Management Program and the Emergency Action Plan.

Environmental Initiatives

In order to reduce dust emissions in the wet scrubber chimney, the site negotiated with CETESB to replace the cyclone. This will take place in early 2008.

The site is collecting 2,900 cubic meters (767,000 gallons) of rain water that it now uses in its production processes.

Local Procurement

In 2007, the site's purchases of local goods, materials and services (excluding raw materials, transportation and energy) totaled $4.6 million. This represents 21 percent of spending.
