Operations
Geismar produces nitric acid and nitrogen solutions as well as phosphate fertilizer and industrial products. It is the largest US producer of nitric acid, with 930,000 tons of capacity. Production of ammonia has been suspended indefinitely. The annual phosphoric acid capacity is 223,000 tons.
Significant Developments
Significant developments in 2007 included:
- The site's highest score on safety in the Organizational Cultural Diagnostic Instrument survey
- Zero OSHA recordable injuries
- Zero lost-time injury rate
- Achieved targeted urea and UAN production for all 12 months utilizing imported CO2
- Highest level ever of employee donations to both the United Way and March of Dimes
Community Relations
Geismar participates in two Community Advisory Panels (CAP), which held 24 meetings in 2007. Issues discussed included plant information, local community concerns, plant expansions and shutdowns. Speakers from various agencies (Department of Environmental Quality, Area Operating Process Technology Program and US Coast Guard) gave presentations to inform CAP members on various issues.
Community Donations
Cash contributions to local community organizations distributed by the plant totaled about $52,468 in 2007. The principal recipients were the United Way campaign, March of Dimes, Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-a-School and the American Cancer Society.
The value of in-kind contributions in 2007 was $73,000. The main recipients were the Parker House/Family Resource Center facility, March of Dimes, Youth Oasis, Baton Rouge Area American Cancer Society and Baton Rouge Green.
Educational Initiatives
Geismar provides scholarship funding through its membership in area industry groups (East Iberville Industrial Group and the Career Builders industry):
- 14 PTEC scholarships of $3,000 each for two years are available for residents of Ascension Parish.
- Residents of Iberville Parish can qualify for four academic scholarships of $6,000 each for four years; 2 PTEC scholarships of $3,000 each for two years, and two one-time technical scholarships of $1,000.
Geismar has an Adopt-A-School partnership with G.W. Carver Middle School. It participates in an Engineer Intern Program with Louisiana State University and has received an Incumbent Worker Grant for Louisiana Community College in Sorrento.
Awards and Recognition
In 2007, the Geismar facility received the Outstanding United Way Campaign Award, the Second Place Team Award in the March of Dimes Walk America and the March of Dimes Outstanding Sponsorship award.
Procurement
The value of all goods, materials and services purchased locally in 2007 (excluding raw materials, transportation and energy) was $18.9 million, which represented 73 percent of procurement.
