PotashCorp Donates $250,000 for New Urology Centre
Boxer shorts worth a quarter of a million dollars cannot be a common gift. But you can bet your bottom dollar many Saskatchewan men will benefit from the valuable underwear awarded at the recent Boxer Bash in Saskatoon.
That’s because the boxer shorts were actually a cheque for $250,000. The money will be used to help construct a Urology Centre of Health, a state-of-the-art facility that will focus on treating prostate cancer and other urological diseases.
PotashCorp Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Wayne Brownlee presented the cheque to Robert Stromberg, honorary volunteer campaign co-chair of St. Paul's Hospital Foundation's Embracing the Future campaign, the organization raising money for the centre.
“The Foundation's highly strategic campaign appealed to PotashCorp,“ said Brownlee. “Just as PotashCorp believes in focusing on a future need and determining the best way to meet it, the Urology Centre of Health has identified a need and developed an innovative plan to deal with it.“
Prostate cancer is second only to lung cancer in the number of men who die of cancer each year. Of the estimated 800 Saskatchewan men diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006, 250 can be expected to die from it. Prostate cancer continues to be the leading form of cancer diagnosed in men.
The centre will be constructed on the St. Paul's Hospital site in Saskatoon.
