CommunitiesPotashCorp participates on community advisory panels, hosts meetings with neighbors and surveys residents in host communities as part of its broad interaction with its production site communities. Community Meetings The company participated in or conducted 102 meetings with community representatives in 2006. About half of these took place with Community Advisory Panels (CAPs); the rest were public meetings. These promote healthy dialogue and help PotashCorp to better understand and respond to stakeholder concerns. Meetings with Officials PotashCorp holds many meetings with legislators and municipal officials, often related to permitting and regulatory issues. In particular, public affairs staff at the Aurora and White Springs phosphate operations meet regularly with state and local officials. They are actively involved with regulatory, permitting and environmental issues associated with their sites. Surveys of Community Leaders In 2006, surveys were completed with community leaders near PotashCorp operations in Rocanville, Augusta, Lanigan, White Springs and Trinidad. The surveys measured perceptions of the company's community involvement; its business practices, specifically in the areas of safety, health and environment; and its impact on local economies. These community surveys revealed a strong base of support for PotashCorp's operations at each site. Using the combined average scores from these five surveys, the company earned the following ratings on a scale from 1 (Not Performing Well) to 5 (Performing Very Well):
The surveys consistently showed high respect among community leaders for PotashCorp's business practices. The company works hard to earn and maintain community support at all sites, recognizing that it can be invaluable in obtaining permits required for continued operations and the expansion of facilities. Responding to Community Concerns Environmental issues were a concern at most operating sites, most commonly relating to wastes, odor, traffic and pollution. The following table illustrates how the company responded to these complaints in 2006.
Community Sustainability Reports Beginning in 2006, the company issued what will be regular site-specific sustainability reports that give local communities a more detailed picture of what is occurring at nearby PotashCorp facilities. These reports include information on safety and environmental performance, community involvement initiatives and spending with local business partners. |
