Aboriginal CommunitiesIn Saskatchewan, Aboriginal people represent a rapidly growing share of the province's population and labor force. PotashCorp is taking steps to build relationships with Aboriginal communities and become a more accessible and attractive employer to Aboriginal people. To these ends, it met with senior representatives from the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies several times in 2006. This First Nations-controlled post-secondary institution provides vocational and technical training for Aboriginal people in the province. The meetings provided the opportunity for both parties to develop a better understanding of each other's roles and mandates and to discuss PotashCorp's needs, particularly in the area of employment for skilled tradespeople and others in the Saskatchewan potash industry. The company also initiated a summer internship program in Saskatchewan for Aboriginal students attending college or trade schools. This will provide them with valuable experience in a corporate environment and allow them to learn about career opportunities at PotashCorp. In 2007, the company posted on its website four summer internship positions specifically targeted at Aboriginal students. It ensured that these postings were brought to the attention of students in relevant post-secondary institutions. The company will also take measures to raise awareness within local Aboriginal communities of employment opportunities at PotashCorp mine sites. It will be a major sponsor of the 2007 Saskatchewan First Nations Summer Games at Red Pheasant First Nation.
