Operations

The largest of PotashCorp's potash mines, Lanigan has an annual capacity of 3.8 million tonnes KCl. It produces granular, standard and suspension potash products. Underground mining operations take place 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) below the surface.

Significant Events

Lanigan had to deal with several inventory adjustment shutdowns due to market conditions in the first half of 2006.

It continued work on the Phase 1 rehabilitation project to bring back idled capacity of 1.5 million tonnes annually by 2008.

Upgrading of the #2 production hoist was completed, and a daily hoisting record of 35,547 tonnes was set on October 5.

Community Relations

Two lunch meetings were hosted on site with the mayor, administrator and local councillor from the Town of Lanigan. The first meeting was to inform them about progress in the Phase 1 rehabilitation project. At the second meeting, they were updated on environmental issues and a possible project, and introduced to the incoming General Manager.

The General Manager is a member of the Action Humboldt Steering Committee, whose role is to stimulate economic development in Humboldt and surrounding area, including Lanigan.

Community Contributions

Cash donations to local community organizations in 2006 totaled Cdn $27,141. The major recipients were Lanigan Youth Center Committee, Lanigan Recreational Complex, Lanigan Curling Club, Lanigan Golf and Country Club and the RCMP DARE drug education project.

The value of in-kind contributions to local community organizations was Cdn $9,483. The beneficiaries were Fort Knox Junior B Hockey Club, Lanigan Cooperative Daycare, Lanigan Volleyball Club, Christian Fellowship Youth Group and Humboldt Tae Kwon Do Club.

For several years the site has provided significant funding to the Lanigan Recreational Complex/Town Hall. It also supports the Lanigan Heritage Museum and a recent initiative to set up a youth center in Lanigan.

Awards

Lanigan was overall runner-up in the underground category at the 2006 Emergency Response and Mine Rescue Competition.

Local Procurement

The value of goods, materials and services purchased locally in 2006 (excluding raw materials, energy and expenditures related to the Phase I rehabilitation project) was Cdn $75.6 million, representing 60 percent of total procurement.
