Investment Screening

The following significant investments were made in 2006:

  • PotashCorp exercised its option to acquire an additional 10.01 percent of shares of Sinofert, increasing its ownership to 20 percent.
  • In April, it acquired 220,100 additional shares in Arab Potash, increasing its ownership interest to 28 percent.
  • In October and December, it increased its investment in SQM to 32 percent ownership interest.

None of these investment agreements included human rights clauses. However, PotashCorp has representation on the Board of Directors of each company.

Screening of Suppliers and Contractors

PotashCorp has identified 370 suppliers as key vendors. Documentation on human rights policies has been requested from all of these companies and 97 percent have provided it. Work continues on obtaining documentation from the remaining companies. To date, no companies have been delisted for their human rights performance.

Training in Human Rights

PotashCorp has taken steps to ensure all employees are aware of and understand its values and commitments to human rights. Every year, all employees are asked to confirm in writing that they have read the PotashCorp Core Values and Code of Conduct, and will comply with the provisions of each of its policies.

Training of Security Personnel

Some PotashCorp security personnel are direct employees, and others are contract employees. Contract security firms provide their employees with security training, while security training for PotashCorp employees is provided by the company or an outside security firm. The type of training provided is reviewed during a facility's annual security audit.

Non-Discrimination

There were no substantiated claims of discrimination on grounds of race, color, sex, religion, political opinion, national extraction or social origin in 2006.

Freedom of Association

The right to exercise freedom of association and collective bargaining is respected by PotashCorp at all of its operations. No operations have been identified where these rights are at risk.

Child Labor

PotashCorp does not use child labor at any of its operations and surveys operations annually to establish the age of the youngest employee at each. Employees in all jurisdictions are significantly older than the legal minimum ages in those jurisdictions. The youngest employee in the company worked in Trinidad and was 18 years and seven months old at the end of 2006. None of PotashCorp's operations has been identified as being at significant risk for incidents of child labor and/or young workers exposed to hazardous work.

Forced Labor

None of PotashCorp's operations have been identified as being at significant risk for incidents of forced or compulsory labor.

Indigenous Rights

There were no incidents of violations involving the rights of indigenous peoples in 2006.
