Recognition Continues for Whitehurst Creek Reclamation Project
Published: August 2005
Whitehurst Creek
The newly-reclaimed Whitehurst Creek
PCS Phosphate Aurora continues to garner accolades for its restoration work at Whitehurst Creek.

The National Association of State Land Reclamationists (NASLR) recently honored the site with its Outstanding Reclamation Award in the non-coal category. The award is the third received by the project this year.

"This award is gratifying because it comes from a professional society in the land reclamation field,” said Jeff Furness, PotashCorp Senior Environmental Scientist. “It’s rewarding to have a project be recognized by your peers who are involved in similar work around the country."

The restoration, which rebuilt the site’s original channel, uplands and floodplain, has brought the creek to a condition better than its pre-mine state. The area is now home to a variety of trees and herbaceous and shrubby plants plus fish and wildlife ranging from ducks and herons to fox and bobcat.

As a nationally recognized authority on the reclamation of mined lands, NASLR advocates the use of research, innovative technology and professional discourse to foster the restoration of lands and waters affected by mining and related activities.

Whitehurst Creek had earlier this year won the Interstate Mining Compact Commission's Kenes C. Bowling National Mine Reclamation Award (Non-Coal category) and the North Carolina Mining Stewardship award (reclamation category).
