Community Investment

Nourishing Our Communities

Food security is an issue that's important to us – locally as well as globally. In our operating communities we partner with a variety of food agencies that focus on food needs. We fund food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, school nutrition programs, gardening programs and more.

Globally, we’ve partnered with WE (formerly Free The Children) to help improve agriculture and food security in Africa, India, China and other developing regions. The partnership – which introduced an Agriculture and Food Security pillar to WE’s successful Adopt a Village development model – also seeks to engage youth on this important issue.

This engagement has occurred through:

  • educational curriculum and speaking tours;
  • PotashCorp-sponsored youth volunteer trips to WE’s international projects; and
  • PotashCorp sponsorship of We Day Saskatchewan, a stadium-sized youth empowerment event linked to a year-long youth service program.

The Global Institute for Food Security

Founded by PotashCorp, the Government of Saskatchewan and the University of Saskatchewan, the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) seeks economic, policy and technical solutions to food security problems.

With commitments of up to $35 million from PotashCorp and $15 million from the Government of Saskatchewan, the Institute is applying Saskatchewan's unique resources and expertise to address the rising global demand for safe, reliable food.

Based at the University of Saskatchewan – a world-renowned centre of excellence in agriculture research – the Institute builds on the province's strengths in crop production and offers solutions to improve food supply systems in parts of the world with similar growing conditions and challenges.
