Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – To mark the season of giving, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp) today launched a $1,000,000 matching gift challenge to support Saskatchewan’s food banks. Wayne Brownlee, PotashCorp’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, kicked off the campaign at the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre, explaining PotashCorp will match every dollar donated to food banks in Saskatchewan through January 15, 2013 up to a maximum of $1 million. “At PotashCorp, we’re focused on the challenge of feeding the world, but everyone can help feed their neighbours, especially during the holiday season,” Brownlee said. “By matching every dollar donated to Saskatchewan food banks, we can help these important organizations bring comfort to those in need. “We’re challenging our Saskatchewan neighbours and communities to help double donations and address the issue of hunger here at home.”The funds raised through the challenge will help food banks across the province buy supplies, restock shelves and support Saskatchewan’s vulnerable citizens. “At our food bank, we see people and families in need year-round. PotashCorp’s matching gift challenge not only helps us during a time of year when people need extra comfort, but also stocks our warehouse after the holiday season is over,” said Laurie O’Connor, Executive Director of the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre. “We hope people across Saskatchewan take PotashCorp up on its challenge and help feed people across the province.”PotashCorp’s 2011 matching gift campaign in support of Saskatchewan food banks helped to raise more than $2 million, nourishing hungry families and restocking shelves at 19 food banks and nine affiliated locations across the province. As the world’s largest crop nutrient company, PotashCorp plays an integral role in global food production. The company produces the three essential nutrients required to help farmers grow healthier, more abundant crops. The year-round wellness facility features a pool, fitness centre, walking/jogging track and community rooms to support the health and wellbeing of the city and nearby communities such as Norton and Sussex Corner. PotashCorp committed $1 million to the construction of the facility in 2010. A number of PotashCorp employees live in the region and work at the PotashCorp New Brunswick potash facility nearby. The opening of the civic centre is an exciting event for the Kings County area, said Stewart Brown, General Manager of PotashCorp New Brunswick.“At PotashCorp, we strive to make the communities where our people live and work better places for everyone. Our investment in making the PotashCorp Civic Centre a reality for the people of the Sussex area is already paying off,” said Brown. “We believe this new facility will bring the region together in fitness and community activity.”The PotashCorp Civic Centre is designed to accommodate people of all ages and abilities. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – Learning how to play the piano or mastering ballet’s first position are common childhood milestones. Unfortunately, not every family can afford to send their children to music lessons or dance classes. To help youth follow their artistic pursuits, Creative Kids, a SaskCulture program, works to help families enroll their children in creative activities regardless of financial or social barriers. In March 2012, PotashCorp partnered with the organization to help raise funds for its programs in the Regina and Saskatoon regions. PotashCorp committed to matching donations dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000 for each community, or $100,000 in total. The generous people of Saskatchewan stepped up and by the end of the Colour a Kid’s Life Campaign this fall, $208,449 in new funding was raised for the organization – more than $100,000 each for Regina and Saskatoon.“Arts and culture are key parts of building strong, balanced communities. When kids don’t have access to activities like singing lessons or language classes, that generation misses out on exposure to creative expression,” said Rhonda Speiss, PotashCorp’s Manager, Corporate Philanthropy. “PotashCorp believes in the value of the Creative Kids program. We strive to make the communities where we live and work better places for everyone, and this organization is helping the youngest among us follow their creative dreams.”With the number of applications the program receives on the rise, the new funding couldn’t have come at a better time, explained Christie Nenson, Fund Development Coordinator with Creative Kids Saskatchewan. As SaskCulture covers all administrative costs for the organization, 100 percent of donations go directly to supporting children.“Access to artistic and cultural programs are a tremendously important part of a child’s education and we don’t want to see any youth with interest in creative pursuits go without because of their family’s financial situation,” Nenson said. “Our partnership with PotashCorp and the results of its community matching gift challenge will provide access to creative activities for more children across Saskatchewan. That’s good news for kids, their families and the province.”In 2011, Creative Kids funded 896 activities valued at $223,855 across Saskatchewan, ranging from music and art to ethnic cooking and beading. As the world’s largest crop nutrient company, PotashCorp plays an integral role in global food production. The company produces the three essential nutrients required to help farmers grow healthier, more abundant crops.
