Soil Fertility

Soil fertility is the soil's ability to supply and sustain nutrients for healthy plant growth. Each type of soil is different in its ability to meet a plant's requirements.

A good, fertile soil will supply soil nutrients from mineral and organic matter reserves and from applied fertilizer nutrients. The nutrients will be readily available and in high enough amounts so as to offer the plant a balanced nutrient supply. Fertile soils also have good physical structure, so as to allow good water penetration and maintain good soil aeration. Roots will be better able to take up nutrients and water in soils with good fertility and good physical structure.

In order to maintain good soil fertility, you need to keep the balance of nutrients in your soil. This will help to maximize your garden's yield. Fertilizers enhance the natural fertility of your soil and replace lost nutrients, to improve the growth and productivity of your garden.
