6 Keys to understanding our business

The world needs more food, and we have a critical role to play in meeting this need. These truths underlie the case for investment in PotashCorp.

The world needs more fertilizer

As populations rise, cities expand, agricultural land per person shrinks and demand for crops increases in response to improving diets in developing nations, the need to maximize the efficiency of the world’s farmland has never been greater. Yet fertility practices continue to keep soils underproductive in much of the world.

To meet the growing global challenge to feed more people on less land, the world needs healthy soil — and more fertilizer.

Among nutrients, the potash business has advantages

Becoming a player in potash is difficult. With limited viable deposits worldwide, multi-billion-dollar development costs and lead times of seven years or more, barriers to entering the industry are considerable. With recent trends pushing global producers to or near their capacity limits, rising demand is likely to challenge supply over the coming years.

These realities, combined with potash's unique benefits as a nutrient, give the potash business distinct advantages over other fertilizer businesses.

Potash is the core of our business

Potash is the namesake of our company and the focal point of our business. With 20 percent of global capacity at our Canadian operations, we have more potash than any other company — a position we've built patiently through acquisitions and internal expansions.

We add to this strength with ownership interests in four global potash-related businesses — in China, Chile, Israel and Jordan — that enhance our bottom line and better position us to benefit from growth in key offshore markets.

Our strategies emphasize earnings growth with reduced volatility

Our Potash First strategy drives our business and provides our greatest opportunity for long-term growth and earnings quality. We prioritize choices that enhance our leading potash position, investing inside and outside our company to prepare for the opportunities that lie ahead.

Our strategies within our three business segments are designed to use our competitive strengths to minimize volatility while maximizing margins.

We are uniquely prepared to meet growing potash demand

With more potash capacity than any other global producer — and resources that enable us to add to that total more quickly and cost-effectively than greenfield capacity — we are uniquely positioned to capitalize on the expected long-term growth in demand.

We continue to use our assets and expertise to expand our competitive advantages, improving our industry-leading position and building long-term value for stakeholders.

We live by our core values

Our Core Values define and guide the way we do business. They remind us that our responsibilities extend beyond financial performance, and beyond the walls of our facilities.

By committing to and living by our Core Values, we create long-term value for our shareholders, build support among stakeholders, engender accountability in our employees, deepen our relationships with customers and partners and improve quality of life in our communities.
