Why Invest?
History of Our Growth
Since PotashCorp became a publicly traded company in 1989 we have grown steadily with a series of strategic investments. We are now the world's largest fertilizer enterprise, by capacity, producing the three primary plant nutrients - nitrogen, phosphate and potassium. This is how we got there.
1990 - 1989 1990 - 1999 2000 - Present
2008
* Brought back previously idled capacity of 1.5 million tonnes at the Lanigan mine in the second quarter of 2008. This project was announced April 11, 2005.
* Announced plans for a 1 million-tonne expanded scope of the mine and mill expansion at Cory, SK, at an estimated additional cost of US $220 million. Total scope of project is now 2.2 million-tonnes at an estimated cost of US $1.1 billion.
* Announced plans for a 700,000 tonne expanded scope of the mine and mill expansion at Rocanville, SK, at an estimated additional cost of US $1 billion. Total scope of project is now 2.7 million-tonnes at an estimated cost of US $2.8 billion.
* Announced a major 1.0 million-tonne debottlenecking and expansion project at Allan that will increase its annual capacity to 3.0 million tonnes at an estimated cost of US $350 million.
2007
* Announced plans for a 2-million-tonne mine and mill expansion at Rocanville, SK, at an estimated cost of US $1.8 billion.
* Announced plans for a new 2-million-tonne potash mine and expanded milling operation in New Brunswick at a cost of approximately US $1.6 billion.
* A completed expansion at Esterhazy provided PotashCorp with 275,000 product tonnes additional capacity at a cost of approximately US $9 million.
* Announced three-for-one stock split of the company's outstanding common shares, payable by stock dividend.
* Announced a major debottlenecking and expansion project at Cory that will increase its annual capacity to 2.0 million tonnes at a cost of approximately US $775 million.
* Announced a project to bring back 360,000 tonnes of idled potash capacity at Patience Lake by 2009, at a cost of approximately US $92 million.
* Brought back previously idled capacity of 0.4 million tonnes at the Allan mine in the second quarter of 2007 and put additional compaction capacity of 0.5 million tonnes on stream. This project was announced April 11, 2005.
2006
* Purchased an additional 6.6 percent of Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) for US $231.5 million, bringing our total ownership interest to 31.6 percent.
* Installed 82,000 additional tonnes of purified phosphoric acid capacity at Aurora.
* Purchased an additional 10.01 percent of Sinofert Holdings Limited (Sinofert) for US $126.3 million, bringing our total ownership interest to 20 percent.
2005
* Completed compactor upgrades at Rocanville, increasing the plant's compactor ability by 1.5 million tonnes.
* Increase capacity at Rocanville by an aggregate of 749,000 tonnes.
* Purchased an initial 9.99 percent stake in Sinofert Holdings Limited (Sinofert), the largest importer (by volume) and largest integrated distributor of fertilizer products (by sales volume) in China, for US $97.4 million.
* Purchased an additional 1 percent of Israel Chemicals Ltd. (ICL), bringing our total ownership to 10 percent.
* Acquired an additional US $18.5 million of Arab Potash Company Ltd. (APC) shares, bringing PotashCorp's total ownership interest to 27.7 percent.
2004
* Invested US $40.6 million to acquire additional Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) shares, bringing our total ownership interest to 25 percent.
* Added shifts at the Lanigan and Allan mines, increasing production with no capital expense.
* Announced two-for-one stock split of the company's outstanding common shares, payable by stock dividend.
2003
* Acquired 26 percent of the shares of Arab Potash Company Ltd. (APC) for US $178.0 million.
* Brought an 83,000 metric tonne expansion of our purified phosphoric acid plant on stream at PCS Phosphate – Aurora, increasing the plant's capacity to 251,000 P2O5.
2002
* Purchased an additional five million Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) shares for US $23.0 million, bringing PotashCorp's total investment in the company to US $154.0 million.
* Acquired Farmland Industries' feed phosphate operations at Joplin, Missouri.
2001
* Purchased approximately 48 million shares of Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) for US $131.0 million.
2000
* Strengthened PCS Purified Phosphates by acquiring the remaining 50 percent of Albright & Wilson Company from Rhodia Inc. for US $42.0 million.
* Purchased the assets of Fertilizantes Mitsui S.A. to create Fosfatos do Brasil, which produces feed products for the Brazilian market.
