How Potash Is Produced

Potash is mined from underground ore bodies that contain minerals left behind by evaporated seas. It is either mined conventionally or extracted with brine, then milled on the surface. A 2-million-tonne greenfield potash mine/mill complex in Saskatchewan has an estimated cost of $2 billion.

Production costs are affected by geological conditions, including ore thickness, consistency and continuity, ore depth and K₂O content; the level of mill recovery; operational capacity and degree of automation.
