1950-2000 and Projections Through 2050

An Ever-Rising PopulationSince 1950, the world's population has more than doubled, from 2.5 billion people to 6.6 billion. Much of that growth has occurred in Asia and Africa, where densely populated countries have significant demands for food. This growth is expected to continue. A recent United Nations (UN) report suggests world population could exceed 9 billion by 2050, further taxing the planet's ability to support healthy living conditions. Even the conservative UN forecast, which allows for pandemics or climate change issues that could slow the growth rate, requires significantly more food to satisfy a growing population.
