US Crop Acreage Forecast Graph

Large Increase in US Corn Acres Needed

After planting 78.3 million acres to corn in 2006, US farmers are increasing production to meet the demand for food and fuel. According to the USDA, 90.5 million acres of corn are expected to be planted in 2007, with acreage likely to remain at or above that level for the foreseeable future. Much of this additional corn is replacing soybeans. US farmers planted 75.5 million soybean acres in 2006 but are expected to reduce this to 67.1 million acres in 2007. This strengthens soybean markets in other regions, particularly in Brazil.
