North America Today...and TomorrowThe US and Canada are major suppliers of food and fiber for the world, with the US accounting for 40 percent of the total global trade in wheat, corn, soybeans and cotton. Both countries are among the world's most efficient agricultural producers – productivity in the US, for example, has improved by more than 1 percent per year since 1950, due largely to ongoing refinements in yield technology and increased understanding of the critical role of proper fertilization. Yields on North American farms far exceed those of India, China and Brazil, especially in corn, where US farms can produce as much as five times the output on the same amount of land. The most significant and stable market, North America provides lower growth but a reliable base for fertilizer sales – a complement to rapidly growing offshore markets. |
