A sustainable Behavioral Accident Prevention Process (BAPP) requires strong safety leadership from senior managers, mid-level managers and first-line supervisors to support employees working with BAPP. PotashCorp is committed to providing these leaders with the tools necessary to ensure their success as they fulfill this safety leadership responsibility.

In 2002, PotashCorp launched a new training process to prepare middle managers and first-line supervisors for success in supporting BAPP. Called "Enhancing Supervisor and Leader Effectiveness in Safety" or ES2, its objective is to provide knowledge and skills to further develop leaders in how to "lead with safety". An integral part of the training is the creation of a feedback mechanism, which enables leaders to know how they are doing in executing the ideal safety behaviors.

The ES2 initiative is so critical to the overall success of BAPP that PotashCorp is providing ES2 training at all facilities that currently have a BAPP system. This training was completed before the end of 2004. For those PotashCorp sites just implementing BAPP, ES2 training will become part of the system's initial rollout.

Seven PotashCorp managers have completed the Behavior Science Technology Inc.® ES2 train-the-trainer course, allowing them to deliver the ES2 material and work with facilities to set up the feedback mechanism. In addition to imparting this new knowledge and the leadership skills, the ES2 trainers facilitate greater understanding of the BAPP system by site-level management.

"Basically, this phase of the system provides first-line supervisors and mid-level managers with the knowledge and skills needed to provide leadership that fully supports a complete BAPP system," said Larry Simmons, Manager of Safety Systems for PotashCorp.

The basic ES2 training components include general information about BAPP and effective listening, interacting and feedback skills. Developing a good understanding of the task-to-relationship balance is also a part of the equation. Developing solid working relationships with direct reports and peers is the foundation for Enhancing Supervisor and Leader Effectiveness in Safety.

Creating a feedback-rich environment is essential to the success of the safety leadership process. As part of the training, a personal action plan is developed to ensure that knowledge and skills learned are applied to the normal work routine of each leader. After completing the training session, leaders are encouraged to observe and provide both success and guidance feedback to employees working in the plant environment.

"These skills allow management personnel to not only support the company-wide BAPP system but also to become better leaders in the workplace," said Simmons.

In the end, implementing all phases of the BAPP system can result in a safer, more productive work environment. For PotashCorp customers, a safer work environment makes for a more reliable business partner. A focus on safety can help keep costs down and efficiency up. Also, operating safe plants can have a positive impact on the quality of products, and on customer service, because it helps keep employees highly motivated.
