Operations
Geismar produces nitric acid and nitrogen solutions as well as phosphate fertilizer and industrial products. It is the largest US producer of nitric acid, with 930 thousand tons of capacity. Production of ammonia has been suspended indefinitely. The annual phosphoric acid capacity is 223 thousand tons.
Significant Developments
The SPA and Poly units were shut down in 2006 and gypsum stack booster pumps installed.
The site began implementing its new behavioral-based safety program (Tiger).
Community Relations
Geismar participates in two Community Advisory Panels, which held two meetings per month in 2006. Issues discussed included plant turnarounds, employment, updated plant reports, economic impacts, local community issues and taxes.
Community Donations
Cash contributions to local community organizations totaled about $56,856 in 2006. The principal recipients were the United Way campaign, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, March of Dimes, Salvation Army and Special Olympics.
The value of in-kind contributions was $63,000. The main recipients were the March of Dimes, Adopt-a-School, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army and the United Way.
Awards and Recognition
In 2006, Geismar achieved first place in area pledges in the March of Dimes "Walk America" campaign.
Local Procurement
The value of all goods, materials and services purchased locally in 2006 (excluding raw materials and energy) was $42.1 million, which represented 80 percent of total procurement.
