Headquartered in Santiago, Chile, SQM is the world’s leading producer of the specialty plant nutrition products, lithium and iodine. The company extracts nitrates and iodine from caliche ore and potassium and lithium from salar brines at Salar de Atacama in northern Chile.
PotashCorp owns the equivalent of 32 percent of SQM under its dual class share structure and has the right to appoint three of the company’s eight board seats. The company has another equivalent-sized shareholder (32 percent).
SQM common stock is traded on the Santiago Stock Exchange under the symbols SQM/A and SQM/B, with ADRs listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SQM.
